The European research satellite SMOS, which will measure the Earth's soil moisture and ocean salinity, was launched by a Rockot vehicle from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in Russia on 2 November.
Launched by a Proton rocket on 16 June 2004, the Astrium-built Intelsat 10-02 is the largest and most powerful satellite ever procured by Intelsat, the international telecommunications satellite operator.
