The Herschel space telescope

The Herschel space telescope, due for launch in 2008, will investigate the origin of the very first stars and galaxies: Astrium’s ground-breaking developments in lightweight silicon-carbide technology are fundamental for the realisation of this programme, and the company is also responsible for the fully integrated payload module which requires a cooling system at virtually absolute zero.
