Built by Astrium for the Canadian operator Telesat, Anik F1R was launched in September 2005 to replace Anik F1 and ensure continuity of service for its customers. Anik F1R provides telecommunications, broadcasting and Internet services over a large zone covering Canada and North America. It is also equipped with a navigation payload.

The spacecraft, which is based on the E3000 version of Astrium's highly reliable Eurostar family, is equipped with 24 transponders in C-band and 32 transponders in Ku-band. The launch mass was 4,500 kg and spacecraft power will be 10 kW at end of life. The satellite, operating in geostationary orbit at the 107.3º West location, will provide commercial communications services for a minimum of 15 years.

Anik means 'little brother' in Inuit.

Anik F1R is based on the E3000 version of EADS Astrium’s highly reliable Eurostar family. It has a launch mass of four tonnes, full chemical propulsion system, a solar array span of 35 metres once deployed in orbit, and spacecraft power of 10 kW at end of life.

As prime contractor, EADS Astrium designed and built the spacecraft and supplied both the platform and the payload.

Anik F1R is the first of two Anik spacecraft ordered by Telesat from EADS Astrium. The second, Anik F3, is currently under construction and scheduled for launch in 2006.
