Galileo

Galileo receivers integrated into mobile phones will be able to provide a wide range of enhanced positioning services

Astrium Services is applying its expertise and its vision in support of the new European global satellite navigation system Galileo, a joint European Community– European Space Agency programme.

Many cars are now routinely equipped with satellite navigation devices to help drivers determine the route and provide information on road congestion. Hikers, mariners and pilots rely on satellite navigation and positioning for their safety. In business, civil aviation, land and hydrographic surveying, agriculture and vehicle fleet tracking are the principal uses of the technology, but the finance and insurance sectors and telecommunications networks also depend for their functioning on the timing signals.

Today, the US GPS has effective monopoly of this sector. Due to be operational by the end of the decade, the Galileo system will be fully under civil control – unlike GPS – and able to deliver guaranteed quality and consistency integrity for safety-critical applications (civil aviation, emergency services, etc). Offering many levels of service to satisfy all user categories, from commercial to public, Galileo will be interoperable with, but independent from, GPS.

Galileo is a major step forward for Europe, the first major European-level infrastructure procurement programme with a global dimension that will bring numerous benefits to the continent and the rest of the world. The market potential is promising, as the demand for satellite navigation services and derived products across the world is growing at around 25% a year.

Astrium Services, which has experience of large, complex Public–Private Partnership schemes for space programmes and proven competence in establishing contractual arrangements to cover long-term partnerships, financing and insurance, is a principal partner in the consortium for the Galileo concession for the deployment and subsequent operations of the Galileo system.
