World Space Week 2009

World Space Week was established in 1999 by the United Nations for the "yearly celebration of the contribution that space science and technology can make to the betterment of the human condition". It takes place annually from 4 to 10 October, in commemoration of the launch of Sputnik on 4 October 1957 and the entry into force of the Outer Space Treaty on 10 October 1967. The event is coordinated by the World Space Week Association, of which Astrium is a sponsoring member.

As in previous years Astrium employees are the Ambassadors for World Space Week and visit schools, colleges, universities, leisure centres, associations and envite everybody to celebrate Space with us.

Do you know our Earth?

Earth observation by satellite is also known as remote sensing - how it works

A satellite image is not just a simple photograph taken by a camera fitted with a film.  Earth observation satellites acquire images using digital detectors similar to those of digital cameras.

The detector inside a satellite measure the intensity of the electromagnetic radiation (the energy) coming from the Earth's surface and the objects that cover it: these are spectral measurements. The spectrum reflected by the Earth is registered as a digital value, which is converted by computers into colours or light levels in the greyscale, creating an image resembling a photograph.
