ASTEL-S
Astrium Services is French MoD’s sole private-sector supplier of fixed satellite services
The French MoD has awarded the entire ASTEL-S contract to Astrium Services, making Astrium Services the sole private-sector supplier of fixed satellite services to the French Ministry of Defence.
The four-year contract will provide French forces all over the world with civil (Ku-, Ka- and C-band) and military (UHF- and X-band) satellite telecommunications services that complement the existing Syracuse satellite network. This covers a complete range of on-demand services from engineering studies and regulatory support, to identification, booking and provision of satellite capacity. The flexible ASTEL-S business model accommodates fluctuations in military satellite capacity requirements: Astrium Services’ subsidiary London Satellite Exchange (LSE) has strategic partnerships with major players in the commercial satellite market (including Intelsat, Eutelsat, Hellas-Sat), for on-demand access to over 80 satellites, thus providing a one-stop shop to meet the needs of the French armed forces and ensure 24/7 service. This contract follows on from the first ASTEL-S contract, which was awarded to Astrium Services by the French Ministry of Defence in May 2005 and under which Astrium provided satellite capacity in specific bands.
The new ASTEL-S contract includes the provision of satellite capacity in the UHF- and Ka-bands. Complementary teleport services will also be provided throughout the world with links back to the Ministry of Defence’s sites in France.

The German Ministry of Defence assigned MilSat Services GmbH, a special purpose company founded by ASTRIUM Services and ND Satcom, with management of the project SATCOMBw Step 2.
The system comprises of two satellites delivered in orbit, satellite control facilities, fixed and transportable user stations, and a comprehensive command and control functionality. MilSat Services is responsible for overall system performance and supports the customer in the long-term operations of the overall system.
Thanks to this project, the German armed forces will have secure access to broadband digital telecommunications services, including voice/data transmissions as well as video and multimedia Applications and services. Satellites are the only solution enabling communications to the theatre of operations totally independent of local infrastructure.
Kourou, 1st October 2009: Bundeswehr‘s first telecommunication satellite COMSATBw-1 was launched into orbit by Ariane 5 flight no. 191. Only 35 minutes later the 2.4 ton satellite had first contact to the ground station in Bangalore, India.
Configuration and positioning of the satellite in geostationary orbit were performed during the first two weeks. The solar panels and antennas deployed as planned.
In-orbit acceptance testing is ongoing to demonstrate to the customer the performance of platform and communications payload.
Following acceptance by the IT-Amt, COMSATBw-1 will be ready for regular operations during its predicted lifetime of 15 years.
The second satellite COMSATBw-2 is currently in final integration and testing. Its launch is scheduled for spring 2010, also by Ariane 5.
