The Hylas 1 ‘Highly Adaptable Satellite’ for flexible response to fluctuating traffic demand is a Ka-/Ku-band geostationary multi-media/subscription HDTV satellite built by Astrium for the British broadband communications operator Avanti under a turnkey procurement contract. The satellite was launched by Ariane 5 from Kourou on 26 November 2010.

Astrium was prime contractor with responsibility for overall programme management and the design and build of the communications payload, while its Indian partner Antrix/ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) was responsible for the satellite bus (based on the I-2K model) and the spacecraft integration and test.

Hylas 1 is an innovative communications satellite providing interactive high definition television and interactive broadband services from its 33.5° W orbital position. It covers 22 countries in western and central Europe.
