  • Premiere for the French navy: French ensigns Jeanne d’Arc and Georges Leygues will dispose of large band communication satellite capacity

Paris, 28/11/2005 – EADS SPACE Services has won an initial contract to supply satellite transmission capacity and telecommunication services to the French navy for the training of their officer-students onboard its Jeanne d’Arc and Georges Leygues vessels.

EADS SPACE Services and its partner London Satellite Exchange will supply two-way satellite telecommunication services in the Ku band between continental France and the naval vessels equipped with marine VSAT stations.

These services with permanent high-speed data rate will offer to the two ships an access to the Intranet and telephone networks of the French Navy. These high performant services will allow also the 1000 crew members to benefit from Internet access and communicate with their families at any time of day (by phone, e-mail, etc.) during their six-month journey around the coasts of the American continent and Africa.

Thanks to its expertness and the agreements concluded with the major commercial satellite operators, EADS SPACE Services was able to offer an optimised solution corresponding to the navy’s requirements. By utilising satellite services provided by three different operators, reliable telecommunications will be available along 95% of the route, even in zones where satellite coverage is hardly available (crossing the Atlantic in both directions, a passage through the Magellan Straits, and a stopover in Ushuaia at the southernmost tip of Argentina).

This is the first operational mission on which the French navy will be using services in the commercial Ku band, and the third contract supplying transmission capacity under the terms of the ASTEL-S convention awarded to EADS SPACE Services by the French defence ministry in May 2005.

EADS SPACE Services develops and promotes satellite services concentrating on secure communications and navigation. As the European "one-stop-shop" provider for milsatcom services, EADS SPACE Services meets its customers’ requirements with innovative and highly competitive end-to-end solutions.

EADS SPACE Services is a wholly owned subsidiary of EADS SPACE, which is dedicated to providing civil and defence space systems. In 2004, EADS SPACE had a turnover of €2.6 billion and 11,000 employees in France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services.

In 2004, EADS generated revenues of €31.8 billion and employed a workforce of more than 110,000.
