Astrium signs a partnership agreement to develop an Earth observation satellite system in Vietnam

Hanoi, 13 November 2009 – Following the signature of the intergovernmental agreement on space cooperation that took place during François Fillon's visit to Vietnam, Astrium CEO François Auque has signed a partnership agreement with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) to develop an Earth observation optical satellite system.

Rosetta comet chaser picks up speed

10 November 2009 - The Rosetta comet chaser is making one last visit home to Earth: On 13 November, the probe, which was built for the European Space Agency (ESA) by Astrium, Europe’s leading space technology company, will perform its fourth and last planetary swingby manoeuvre, utilising the Earth’s gravitational force to boost its speed for the long journey out to comet 67P Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

SMOS – The latest satellite to monitor climate change is placed in orbit

November 2nd 2009 - The SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission) satellite was launched this morning by a Rockot launcher from the Plesetsk cosmodrome. The satellite is a Franco-Spanish project, which involves the Centre of National Space Studies, CNES in France, the Centre for the Technological and Industrial Development, CDTI in Spain and the European Space Agency, ESA, as part of its “Living Planet” Earth observation programme. Its mission is to measure the soil moisture and the ocean salinity on a global scale using its radiometric instrument MIRAS (Microwave Imaging Radiometer with Aperture Synthesis), built by Astrium in Spain. Thales Alenia Space is the prime contractor for this programme.
