Multi-mission satellite en route for Kourou
10 march 2010
COMS will carry out communications, oceanography and meteorology missions for South Korea.

COMS was developed and manufactured by Astrium in cooperation with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). The highly advanced satellite will carry three payloads, one for meteorology, one for ocean observation and one for communications.

COMS is the first of its kind for European industry. Astrium has successfully met the challenge of integrating three separate meteorology, oceanography and telecommunications payloads, with their sometimes conflicting requirements, onto the same satellite.

The satellite left Toulouse, France, on 10 March for the French Guiana Space Centre, from where it will be launched at the end of April.
