Mapping out the future of GMES

The main objective of the conference is to achieve European consensus on the way forward for long-term GMES issues. Under the title ‘The Way to the European Earth Observation System’, the focus was on ensuring GMES sustainability. Speakers at this major forum for a wide range of GMES stakeholders included senior officials from the European Commission and the European Space Agency, national and regional government ministers and representatives from a number of European countries, and high-ranking personnel from a variety of GMES user communities (urban planning, civil protection, environmental management, transport, insurance).

Presentations and panel discussions addressed, inter alia, the progress achieved so far, perspectives on GMES services from the user’s and the provider’s view, the Europe dimension of GMES, GMES as a driving force for innovation and employment, and the relevance of GMES for the regions.

The conference was organised by the German Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Affairs as part of the German Presidency of the EU Council.
