BremenBremen is the European centre of excellence for manned spaceflight, launch vehicles and space robotics. With a workforce of around 1,000 highly qualified employees, this north German site is responsible for key European contributions to the International Space Station ISS, such as the Columbus space lab and the unmanned Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV). Astrium Bremen is the industrial operator responsible for operating the European elements of the Space Station. In addition, the upper stage of the Ariane 5 launch vehicle – the global market leader for commercial satellite transportation – is developed and built at the site. Other work and research areas include rendezvous and docking, automatic spacecraft landing, tank technology, zero-gravity research and mission planning.

Getting there

By car

From Berlin/Hanover on the A7

Take the “Walsroder Dreieck” exit onto the A27, towards Bremen. Continue to the Bremen Autobahnkreuz (intersection) and take the A1, towards Bremen/Osnabrück. Leave the A1 at Arsten. After the underpass, you reach “Neuenlander Straße” and continue towards Flughafen/Airport up to the next junction (traffic lights, Shell petrol station on your right). Turn left onto the “Neuenlander Ring” to Flughafen/Airport and continue to the next junction (traffic lights). Turn left again onto the “Flughafendamm” and drive to the end of the road. Turn left into Cornelius-Edzard-Strasse. At the corner of Airbus-Allee you will see Astrium’s gatehouse 1.

From Oldenburg on the B6/B75

Leave the B6 at Flughafen/Airport. After about 1.5 km turn right into “Flughafendamm” (sign Flughafen). Continue to the end of the road. Turn left into Cornelius-Edzard-Strasse. At the corner of Airbus-Allee you will see Astrium’s gatehouse 1.

From Hamburg or Osnabrück/Münster on the A1

Leave the A1 at Arsten going towards Bremen. Turn left onto the “Neuenlander Ring” towards Flughafen/Airport and continue to the next junction (traffic lights). Turn left again onto the “Flughafendamm” and continue to the end of the road. From Bremerhaven on the A27

Leave the A27 at the “Abfahrt Freihäfen” towards Bremen. Take the left lane and follow the signposts to the Flughafen/Airport. At the Flughafen exit leave the B6. After about 1.5 km you turn right into “Flughafendamm” (sign Flughafen). Continue to the end of the road. Turn left into Cornelius-Edzard-Strasse. At the corner of Airbus-Allee you will see Astrium’s gatehouse 1.

By train

Leaving the main station, heading towards the city centre, you will see the public transport stops on the left of the station square. Take tram No. 6, towards “Flughafen/Airport”, getting off at the final stop, “Hünefeldstraße” (the ticket can be bought from the driver). The terminus is within sight of Astrium. Turn left into Cornelius-Edzard-Strasse. At the corner of Airbus-Allee you will see Astrium’s gatehouse 1.

By plane

Astrium in Bremen is located within easy walking distance of Bremen Airport. Upon leaving the Arrivals hall, you may either take tram No. 6 one stop to the terminus, “Hünefeldstraße”, or you can turn right and walk about 500 m past Hotel Atlantic. Turn left into Cornelius-Edzard-Strasse. At the corner of Airbus-Allee you will see Astrium’s gatehouse 1.
