Dossier MetOp: the all-weather satellite
8 october 2012
The weather may not have been improved by the advent of satellites, but the forecasts certainly have!
Millions of people all over the world rely on weather forecasts every day.
For some, they answer the relatively trivial question of what clothes to wear, while for others they provide information of vital importance, for instance when to schedule the deployment of water bombers to extinguish wildfires. Over and above their use as simple weather forecasting tools, meteorological satellites like MetOp deliver a daily stream of data that enables us to predict extreme weather phenomena and better understand the climatic events that periodically shake our planet. This wealth of satellite data, captured and processed in real time, has already helped to save hundreds of thousands of lives.
