Giving the ISS a boost
20 august 2010

The International Space Station constantly loses altitude due to the atmospheric friction. Between 1998 and 2002, for example, when solar activity was particularly intense, the station lost up to one kilometre of altitude every day. To counteract the phenomenon, several different spacecraft, including the ATV, can “boost” the ISS, increasing its altitude by several kilometres in a single bound.
