The new ASIC, SCOC3, integrates all the functions needed for satellite platform computer in a single component. It offers the computing power of the latest generation 32-bit SPARC processor (LEON 3) and all the communications interfaces and telemetry/remote control, reconfiguration interfaces and memory management functions requested by our customers. The extremely high level of integration considerably reduces the size, weight and cost of our new generation satellite On Board Computer and it represents significant headway towards standardising Astrium computers.
“The apprenticeship is a good test of your will, you are expected to work to the best of your ability at every single stage. In the first year we were at college full time studying an intensive course in electrical and mechanical engineering. In our second year my group and I completed our own apprentice project. We were given a task of launching a high altitude balloon that captures images of the curvature of the Earth, the blackness of space and the glow of the atmosphere. This has been fascinating and an amazing opportunity for us to showcase our skills and abilities and I am sure this will become even more interesting in the future for other apprentices. We were also introduced to the work placement system in Astrium. I have gained a lot from this apprenticeship so far, not only have I already earned a National Certificate in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, but I have also been given the opportunity to work to the best of my ability and really make something of myself. The opportunities are equal for everybody so a bit of hard work will never be held against you.”
